Stone Construction

Osgood Masonry and Contracting Services for your stone building - repairs, renovation, extension or conversion. Our stone masons can build new masonry to match the style, color and finish of the stone masonry on your existing building.

Stone masonry comes in many different styles and finishes, this is usually characteristic of the region in which it was built. Your new stonework can blend naturally with the stonework on the rest of the building and the surrounding area. This is ideal if you're the owner of a aged property; stone house or villa.

Stone Repair Mortar

Natural stone repair mortar for sandstone and limestone masonry repairs. As stone masonry contractors our stone masons use this repair material in our own commercial projects. It is also ideal for DIY stone repairs to garden walls, stone lintels, window sills and jambs, garden ornaments and stone fireplaces.

This specialist stone repair material is specially premixed to US standards under guidelines for historic stone masonry repair. It is available in different size containers complete with technical support and instructions on how to mix it and how to repair the stone.

The repair mortar is a blend of natural minerals and aggregates in a natural hydraulic lime binder. It contains no cement therefore the material is totally breathable (vapor permeable).

The mortar is premixed to be suitable with most general sandstone and limestone masonry. We can arrange to manufacture the mortar to match specific stone masonry at additional cost if you supply us with a sample. The aggregates or mineral content will be varied to match the texture and color of the stone sample you provide.

Concrete Repairs (spalling)

Spalling concrete is largely due to a natural deterioration process called carbonation. Carbon dioxide in the air diffuses into the concrete and reacts with the alkalis in it. The concrete becomes carbonated and this allows the embedded steel rebar to corrode. These corroded steel re-bars expand and exert a force on the surrounding concrete causing the concrete to bulge and crack.

The early stages of spalling concrete will not affect the safety of the building. However, the spalling concrete should be repaired as soon as possible before the steel re-bars corrode further and damage larger areas hence the term 'concrete cancer'.

Failure of the Mortar

The ingress of water into the external fabric of the building and subsequently internally for pre-cavity constructed buildings.

Frost or water damage indicated by the 'spalling' of the face of the construction materials.

Structural damage that will eventually affect the building fabric if the previous stages of obsolescence are not addressed. Subsequently, costly reconstruction may be required. Building owners commission the restoration of a building for various reasons as a result of obsolescence.

Masonry (re-point)

Repointing aids Conservation, Image, Property Value and Resale

There are numerous reasons for the building owner to commission the restoration of the external fabric of a building. However, 'obsolescence' is typically a major factor in the decision-making process.

In the US and to a large extent New England, the main construction materials for the built environment of the previous centuries have tended to be brick, stone and Granite - all of which benefit from longevity. Combined with the continuous reuse of buildings, there is today a substantial percentage of aging building stock that suffers from varying degrees of external obsolescence.

The deterioration in the pointing element of the construction will eventually lead to the poor performance of the building generally. With the lower life cycle of the mortar element in relation to the other materials used in construction, its periodic replacement is vital to secure the general longevity of the building.

Repointing will Restore

Conservation - the preservation of historical buildings.

Image- for commercial organizations, to maintain the aesthetic value of their buildings.

Pollution - urban building stock suffers from the effects of pollution from motor vehicles, the legacy of past industries and the use of fossil fuels for heating.

Property Value - the performance and aesthetics of the building greatly affects the value of the property.

Resale - poor building performance will affect the resale of the property and in turn, its resale value.

In the majority of cases, the project costs associated with external restoration of a building are relatively low in relation to the benefits that can be achieved; In particular, the increase in the value of the property and subsequent resale factors. Also, the enhanced image of the property and reduction in risk of potentially costly structural defects. Unfortunately, there are significant risks in undertaking restoration projects of this type.

With the visual impact of external work to a building and the inherent perception of its maintenance, care must be taken to ensure the company undertaking the work possesses the necessary skills and experience. Today, there are too many examples of poor workmanship that undermine professional companies that have standards. Make the choice to use Osgood on your next project you will be more then satisfied.

Stone Cleaning, Masonry

We at Osgood offer chemical masonry cleaning services for sandstone, limestone, terracotta, faience and unpolished granite masonry. Cleaning and removal of dirt, moss, grease, oil, carbon, paint, graffiti, efflorescence or any form of atmospheric pollution. We welcome any opportunity to discuss your masonry cleaning requirements. As an experienced stone cleaning contractor, we generally recommend chemical systems for professional and industrial brick and stone masonry cleaning.

Chemical Cleaning

Chemical cleaning is the most practical method for cleaning of any type of brick or stone masonry. We do not recommend abrasive cleaning systems such as sandblasting because these remove excessive amounts of material from the surface of the masonry. We offer the following chemical cleaning methods with low to medium pressure jet water systems.

When cleaning brick or stone work it is more common to use a high powered pressure washer, but water alone may not pull the carbon deposits from the brick or stone surface.

If this problem does occur then a traffic film remover will be applied and power washed off. In some cases there may still be a problem due to the heavy carbon deposits, if this does occur then a mild form of Hydrofluoric acid will be applied until the brick or stone work is clean. This operation may take several coatings.
